If you ask ten IPTV users which player they use, eight will say TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro. Both are excellent, both work with any M3U or Xtream Codes subscription, and both are free to start. But they are built for very different people. After setting up hundreds of customers on each, this is our honest comparison of TiviMate vs IPTV Smarters, so you can pick the right one in two minutes instead of trying both.

The short answer

Platforms: Smarters wins by a mile

TiviMate is Android only. It runs on Fire TV, Android TV, Google TV and Android phones and tablets, and that’s it. There is no version for Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, iOS or desktop.

IPTV Smarters Pro is available almost everywhere: Android, Fire TV, Samsung and LG Smart TVs, iPhone and iPad, Windows and macOS. If your household mixes a Samsung TV in the living room with an iPad in the kitchen, Smarters lets you use the same interface on all of them. On Smart TVs it is often the only serious player available without a box.

Live TV experience: TiviMate is in a different league

This is where TiviMate shines. The interface is designed around the EPG (TV guide): a full-screen grid, seven days of programmes, a mini-guide you can browse while watching, and channel switching that feels instant. Favourites, channel groups, custom sorting, hiding channels you never watch, catch-up (rewind to a programme that aired earlier) and picture-in-picture are all built in and polished.

IPTV Smarters Pro shows live channels as a list with a preview window and an EPG panel. It works fine, but the guide is smaller, navigation needs more clicks and switching channels is a little slower. If live sport is your main use, you will feel the difference.

Movies and series (VOD): Smarters is more comfortable

Smarters treats video on demand as a first-class citizen: posters, categories, search, cast information and a “continue watching” row. It feels like a small Netflix. TiviMate added VOD later and it works, but the layout is basic and the search is slower to use on a remote. If half of your viewing is films and box sets, Smarters is the nicer experience.

Recording and multi-view

TiviMate Premium can record live TV to the device’s storage or a USB drive, schedule recordings from the guide and show up to four channels at once (multi-view), which is fantastic for a Sunday of football. Smarters offers a two- or four-screen multi-view on some platforms, but no scheduled recording.

Price

TiviMate is free with one playlist and no advanced features. TiviMate Premium unlocks everything (multiple playlists, recording, favourites sync, backup) for a small yearly fee, licensed for up to five devices, or a one-off lifetime payment. For a player you use every day it is one of the best-value purchases in IPTV.

IPTV Smarters Pro is free to download on most platforms; Smart TV versions and some app-store versions may show ads or ask for a small activation fee per device to remove them. Either way the cost is minimal.

Ease of setup

Both take under two minutes. In Smarters you type the Xtream Codes login (username, password, server URL) and you’re in. TiviMate asks for the same details, then downloads the channel list and guide; the first load takes a little longer but it is a one-time wait. Smarters is slightly more beginner-friendly because there are fewer options to get lost in.

Stability and buffering

Both are stable when the connection and the server are good. TiviMate gives you more control (buffer size, decoder per channel, hardware acceleration), which helps on weaker Wi-Fi. Smarters lets you switch between its built-in player, Exo Player and VLC, which solves most “black screen” problems. Neither app can fix a bad provider; if you are freezing every evening, read our guide to stopping IPTV buffering first.
