An Android TV box turns any television into a full IPTV set-top box, and unlike a Fire Stick it gives you Ethernet, more storage and more power for 4K. The problem is the market: hundreds of boxes with names nobody has heard of, all promising “8K” and “64 GB” for 35 euros. This buying guide explains what actually matters for IPTV, which specs are marketing noise, and which boxes we recommend to our customers in Europe in 2026.
Two kinds of “Android box”: don’t confuse them
This is the most important thing to understand before you buy.
- Android TV / Google TV boxes run the official TV version of Android, certified by Google. You get the Play Store for TV, a proper remote-friendly interface, Google Assistant, Chromecast built in, Netflix in 4K and automatic updates. Examples: Nvidia Shield, Xiaomi Mi Box / TV Box S, Chromecast with Google TV, Nokia Streaming Box.
- Generic AOSP boxes (X96, T95, H96, Tanix and similar) run the phone version of Android hacked onto a TV. They are cheaper and often have better specs on paper, but the interface is clumsy with a remote, Netflix and Prime only work in SD or not at all, updates never arrive and the “64 GB / 8K” numbers are frequently fake.
For IPTV both types work, because players like TiviMate and IPTV Smarters install on either. But if the box will also be your Netflix, YouTube and Prime device, buy a certified Android TV box. You will thank yourself every day.
The specs that matter for IPTV
1. Ethernet port (Gigabit if possible)
A wired connection is the number one cure for buffering. Most boxes have an Ethernet port, but cheap ones are limited to 100 Mbps, which is still plenty for 4K IPTV. Gigabit is nice to have, not essential.
2. Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6, dual band
If you can’t run a cable, insist on dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 + 5 GHz). Single-band 2.4 GHz boxes buffer on any busy network. Wi-Fi 6 helps in flats with many neighbouring networks.
3. RAM: 2 GB minimum, 4 GB ideal
RAM is what keeps the EPG, the channel list and the video decoder running together. 2 GB works; 4 GB keeps everything snappy for years. The “8 GB” or “16 GB” RAM on 30-euro boxes is almost always false.
4. Processor: Amlogic S905X4 / S905Y4, Rockchip or Tegra
For IPTV you want hardware decoding of H.265 (HEVC) and, increasingly, AV1. The Amlogic S905X4 and S905Y4 (found in most 2024–2026 Android TV boxes) do both and handle 4K at 60 fps without effort. The Nvidia Tegra X1+ in the Shield is still the fastest chip in any consumer box.
5. Storage: 8 GB is enough, 16 GB comfortable
IPTV apps are tiny. Storage only matters if you want to record with TiviMate, and then a USB stick does the job. Don’t pay for 128 GB.
6. Android version and updates
Look for Android TV 12 or newer (Google TV 12/14). Certified boxes receive security updates; generic ones ship with an old Android and stay there.
What you can ignore
“8K”: no IPTV service streams in 8K and almost no TV can display it. “Bluetooth 5.3”: only matters for a gamepad or headphones. Backlit keyboards, air-mouse remotes, game bundles: nice extras that say nothing about streaming quality. “Pre-loaded with 10,000 channels”: a red flag; boxes sold with channels included are usually locked to a poor provider and stop working when that provider disappears.

Expensive, but still unmatched: the fastest processor, Gigabit Ethernet, 3 GB RAM, AI upscaling that makes HD channels look close to 4K, Dolby Vision and Atmos, and updates for years. If you watch a lot of TV and want zero compromises, this is it.
Best value: Xiaomi TV Box S (2nd Gen) or Xiaomi Mi Box 4K
Certified Google TV, 2 GB RAM, dual-band Wi-Fi, 4K HDR, Chromecast built in, for roughly the price of a Fire Stick 4K. The only miss is the lack of an Ethernet port; a USB-C or USB-A to Ethernet adapter fixes that for a few euros.
Best with Ethernet under 80 euros: Nokia Streaming Box 8010 / Strong LEAP-S3
Certified Android TV, 4 GB RAM, S905X4, Ethernet port, HDMI 2.1 and a proper remote. The kind of box we install for customers who want cable-and-forget reliability in the living room.
Best mini stick: Chromecast with Google TV 4K or Fire TV Stick 4K Max

Best generic box if you must: an S905X4 model with 4 GB real RAM
If your budget is strictly under 40 euros, pick a box built on the Amlogic S905X4 with real 4 GB RAM and dual-band Wi-Fi, from a seller with lots of recent reviews. Expect to use it only for IPTV.
Setting up IPTV on your new box
- Connect Ethernet (or 5 GHz Wi-Fi), sign in to your Google account and run all updates.
- Open the Play Store and install TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro. On generic boxes without the Play Store, use the Downloader app exactly as on a Fire Stick.
- Enter your Xtream Codes login (server URL, username, password) from your STORY IPTV activation message.
- In the player settings, set buffer size to Large and enable hardware decoding.
- Wait two minutes for the TV guide to load, then set your favourites.

Box or Smart TV app?
If you have a recent Samsung or LG TV you can skip the box entirely and use a Smart TV IPTV app. A box is worth it when you want TiviMate, Ethernet, recording, or when the TV is older and slow. Many customers use both: the app on the bedroom TV, a box in the living room, same subscription on all.
